With James Rees. Thursday, Feb. James Rees is the executive director of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, the group charged with the ownership and maintenance of Mount Vernon, the estate of first President George Washington.
The transcript follows. Editor's Note: Washingtonpost. Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.
Thanks for joining us today, James Rees. What's the mood like at Mount Vernon today? What are you doing to celebrate Washington's birthday?
James Rees: It's cold and the skies look like snow, but there still exists a birthday spirit. At 8: 3. Before the day is over, there will be many more.
We also expect to conduct a number of interviews with the media - - newspapers, radio stations, television stations - - and in that way, share the birthday celebration with people and the nation.
Centreville, VA. Do we have any idea why Washington never had children of his own? Several biographies had called him a real ladies man.
James Rees: We know that George and Martha Washington wanted to have children and tried to have children, but it simply didn't happen.
Some scholars think that he may have been rendered sterile by disease during his teenage years, but this is impossible to prove.
Others believe that when Martha gave birth to her fourth child with her first husband, Daniel Parke Custis, she may have experienced a difficult childbirth which made additional children an impossibility.
George Washington was very attractive to ladies - - he was tall, dashing and powerful, and he loved to dance - - but we think he was incredibly loyal to Martha.
Their marriage was a happy one, lasting some 4. What exactly is there to do at Mount Vernon? James Rees: Because the weather is so cold, we are not nearly as crowded as expected.
So it's a great day to visit. The Mansion tour includes some new twists, you'll bump into historical characters, and you'll see the fancy wreaths which have been presented at the tomb.
The gardens are mostly asleep right now, but the landscape is still stunning - - the views across the Potomac are remarkable.
We've also added some new residents over the past several years - - horses, mules, pigs, chickens, sheep and turkeys - - all the correct breeds from the 1.
You should leave a little time for shopping, too, and the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant has great hot cider spiced or alcohol- free!
If it snows, there is a superb opportunity for some great photography - - everything looks so pristine and beautiful.
Do you have the recipe for the hoecakes and honey you served at the open house this weekend? They were delicious! James Rees: Hoecakes are really simple, and they had to be, because they were actually cooked over an open fire on the blade of a real hoe.
Here's the recipe for hoecakes and honey that we served, also called cornmeal pancakes or mush cake. Add 4 cups warm water must be 1.
In the morning, add 1 egg and 4 cups white cornmeal and 4 cups warm water 1. Cook with oil on a very hot griddle. Turn pancakes when they become transparent.
Bon Appetit! Can you tell us the times Mt. Vernon is open to the public and the cost. Also is most of the furnishings replicas or are some original to the home.
If original, how do you know that information. James Rees: The hours are 9: 0. March hours are 9: 0. April through August hours are 8: 0.
September and October hours are 9: 0. November through February hours are 9: 0. Seniors age 6. Group admission fees are slightly less.
When the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association purchased the estate in 1. Benjamin Rees has had a total of 2 company appointments in his career.
Most individuals are officers at a single …. James Rees is on Facebook. Join Facebook to connect with James Rees and others you may know.
Facebook gives people the power to share and makes the world. Since then, we have worked very hard to obtain as many objects as possible.
About 2. Most of the other pieces were 1. George Washington. There are just a few reproductions. Many original pieces have been passed down through family members for generations, and others have a "paper trail" of letters and other documents that provide proof of their origins.
Experts can also study the wood and craftsmanship to determine the exact age of a piece. This type of investigation is challenging and time- consuming, but also a real adventure.
George Washington? James Rees: Like all great, old houses, Mount Vernon has its share of ghost stories.
In most rooms, we have security systems which project invisible beams from one wall to the next.
Now and then, when the Mansion is totally empty and locked up tight, a chair or table suddenly moves several inches, breaking the beam and setting off an alarm.
How does this happen? We have no idea. Just a few weeks ago, one of our guides swears she saw a gentleman in 1. Does the Mount Vernon Ladies Association officially support abolishing "Presidents' Day" and returning Lincoln's and Washington's Birthdays as separate and distinct holidays, and on the correct dates 1.
I saw an article a couple of years ago reprinting the congressional debates of the late 1. Washington's birthday was 2.
February, moving it to the nearest weekend would make it completely unknown in a generation's time. James Rees: Definitely.
We feel strongly that George Washington's Birthday should be celebrated again, like it was for some 2. Interestingly, the current holiday we refer to as Presidents' Day is still on the books, that is written into the federal statutes, as George Washington's Birthday.
That's why we are busy working with a group of Congressmen, from both sides of the aisle, who are introducing a bill, as we speak, that requires all government communications and promotions to refer to this holiday, as it should be, as George Washington's Birthday.
This may be that rare opportunity to turn back the clock to a time when this holiday really meant something more than white sales at the mall, a time when there were parades and other ceremonies honoring George Washington.
So please, let's all write our Congressmen and Senators to express our feelings that George Washington deserves his own special day.
Annapolis, Md.. Thanks for taking my question. Concerning Washington's governing of his slaves, I know that some slave owners allowed their slaves to live in a quasi- democracy, where they ruled over themselves and were even their own judicial and executive branch.
Did Washington have any such provisions. James Rees: As far as I know, Washington's slaves were not allowed to create a formal system for governing themselves.
However, most slaves were able to travel from Mount Vernon to other plantations, to "date" slaves both at Mount Vernon and elsewhere, and to marry and raise families.
Washington did not separate families, as some slaveowners did, and many families were able to plant their own gardens.
Washington's ideas about slavery changed dramatically over his lifetime. He inherited his first slaves at age 1. Martha and her slaves moved to Mount Vernon, the slave population grew dramatically.
After the Revolutionary War, Washington recognized that the institution of slavery could not and should not survive in our new republic, although he was afraid that to address abolition head- on would tear the new union apart.
So he did what he felt, under the circumstances, was the best he could - - he granted freedom to his slaves in his will.
He was the only founding father to do so. Burr Ridge, IL. It has been recorded that on his death bed, Napoleon said, "I suppose they expected me to be another Washington.
Napoleon, of course, choose to parlay military power into personal political power. Did Washington know of Napoleon, and if he did, what was his opinion of Napoleon?
James Rees: You know your history! It has been said that near the end of his life, when he was defeated and in exile, Napoleon did indeed say that "They expected me to be another Washington," implying that no one should be expected to live up to the incredibly high standards of George Washington.
Washington was a very rare leader of a revolution, because unlike Julius Caesar, Oliver Cromwell and Napolean, he won the revolution and then gave up all his power, so that the people could truly rule themselves.
Napoleon allowed himself to be made an emperor, while George Washington absolutely refused to allow his officers to make him King.
It takes a great deal of character to surrender power, and Washington did it again after serving as president for two terms. He refused to run for a third term, even though the people were eager for him to remain in power.
Washington died in 1. As far as we know, Washington never knew much about Napoleon and never saw his rise to power. Old Town, Alexandria.
